With so many distractions occurring around the world (Hong Kong unrest, Taiwan elections, US-China Trade War etc.) our ACSME Roundtable in August generated a lively discussion about the Australia-China relationship and the opportunities for Australian SMEs in China. The main conclusions were:
Don’t focus on China as one market with 1.4 billion people. It’s a lot more complex than that. Do your research, pick your landing spot, invest in your brand to stand out from the competition, and build trusted relationships.
Don’t expect to raise money from China to fund Australian based projects. If this is your focus, seek Chinese money which is already in Australia (via accountants, wealth managers etc.)
Consider the opportunity to commercialise your technology, idea or capability in China, and tap into the large amount of funds which are available to invest in foreign innovation (in healthcare, medical, environmental protection, education, food etc.). Consider joining our ACSME Innovation Mission to China in October this year
